Winmail File Viewer – No.1 app to open winmail.dat files on the App Store! Now updated for iOS 10 and the latest iPhones and iPads.

If this app does not open your winmail.dat file, or you have any questions, doubts, or suggestions, then please email me – [email protected]

FAQs –

1)Why doesn’t this app work for me??

A: Make sure it is a winmail.dat file that you are trying to open with this app!

a)Files such as just a .dat (not winmail.dat) are special data files (hence the name!), and only the software which created them can open them. They can’t be opened using this app.
b)A .wmv file is NOT a winmail.dat file, even though it looks similar! It’s a ‘Windows Media Video’ file which can’t be opened with this app.
c)An ‘Untitled Attachment’ or a ‘MIME’ file or an ‘.eml’ file is NOT a winmail.dat file, and this app should not be used to open this type of file.

Also be sure to check that your file has downloaded completely on your iPhone/iPad. Sometimes large files with sizes in MB take time to get downloaded, especially if you are on a slow WiFi network.
(App will only work on fully downloaded winmail.dat files.)

If it still does not work, then re-starting your iPhone or iPad might do the job. And if nothing helps then email me, I will resolve the issue. :-)

2)Why does the app show ‘This is not a TNEF file’?

A: Around 99% of winmail.dat files are created using TNEF encoding, and all the ‘winmail’ apps and software are able to open only these types of winmail.dat files.
The solution to open non-TNEF winmail.dat file has not yet been found, though I am working on it and hopefully should be able to include it in the next app update.

3)How do I open / view / edit the files which are contained inside my winmail.dat file?

A: This app will ONLY open the winmail.dat attachment, but for any file contained inside the winmail file you will either need the functions/default apps of your iPhone or iPad OR youll need to install other apps to open Word, Excel, PDF, large Image files, zipped files, Audio and Video files.
The Winmail File Viewer app is a simple app to open winmail.dat (TNEF encoded) files, so please don’t expect it to do anything more.

4)Why do I get a ‘Blank page’ when I open the winmail.dat file using your app?

A: Sometimes there is absolutely nothing inside a winmail.dat file except some kind of formatting, fonts, AVG virus scanner info, voting buttons, email read receipts etc. So, if you get a blank page after opening the winmail.dat file please don’t worry because there is nothing wrong with the app. Still, if you need assistance you can contact me via email and I will get back to you within a few hours.

5)Are there any new features planned for this app in the future?

A: Yes, I will be adding lots of new features and functionality to this app in the future, so please keep using it!

Pros and cons of Winmail File Viewer app for iPhone and iPad

Winmail File Viewer app good for

It was a pain to not open these files and I am a bit surprised to be getting them. This seems like a get around rather than a fix - but what the hell. Seems to work fine - but right after I installed it I could not open the files. Kinda thought I had wasted my time and money. Then after a bit I tried again and it worked. So give it a bit of time, guess the phone needs to think...... Then it will work. I now have os 5 on the iPhone and it works. Hope this helps.
This app works great - but you need to initialize it after downloading. Once I downloaded it, I closed all open apps. I opened this app by itself. Then I closed it. This seems to initialize it in the iPhone. It worked after that. I went into my email and opened a Word doc out of the attached winmail.dat file. This app works as advertised. I have iOS 5.xx and iPhone 4.
At first after the download it did not work but then I rebooted my phone and the app worked. Also very fast response time for support issues by email. Thanks!
Just downloaded and didnt have to reset my phone or anything as described in other reviews. I just clicked on the winmail.dat attachment and was able to select the app and it opened fine.
I have an iPhone4 and could not open winmail.dat files attached to my emails. I downloaded this app and it works like a charm. I can now view Word, Excel, jpg & PDF files with ease. Thanks, Hiren! I love it!!
Does all that is says it will do and more. Contacted Hiren on some questions and the response was immediate and very helpful. Hirens customer support is excellent! Thanks Hiren, other App providers could take a lesson on customer support from you

Some bad moments

I have download this because of issues with people sending me emails from outlook or lotus smartsuite to me. All I get is winmail.dat and I was told to get this it work. Sadly it does NOT. I follow the simple step by step and come up showing me nothing. All I get think is that my iphone 4 got upgrade to 4.0.2 os2 and maybe they need to update their little application to work.
Downloaded app for winmail files. Does NOT work at all. I have the iPhone 4.
Bought it. Tried it. Did not work. Tried closing all other apps as suggested as well. I have an Iphone5
Closed all apps before installing on iPhone 4s on 5.1.1, and then opened app to initialize (just in case); but it still didnt open the winmail.dat attachment. Completely sick of getting ripped off...
The previous black icon with a simple white envelope icon was classy. The new "stylish" icon is simply horrid. How is bright green and blue on a plain background "stylish?" Please change the icon back!
Almost 90% of the winmail.dat files I receive in emails contain pictures. Finding an app which would enable me to open this type of file and view the pictures contained within, thrilled me! Sadly, however, this app does NOT allow the user to be able to do this. The picture(s) comes through as an "untitled attachment" file, and according to the creator of this apps description, we are told that these types of files would not be able to be viewed. It is my own fault for buying this app without fully understanding its capabilities - but I did not know that a picture in a winmail.dat file would be called an "untitled attachment". Further searching in the App Store, I found a more expensive app called "winmail.dat - Letter Opener". I bought that one and it worked great - allowing me to be able to view pictures, amongst other types of file types as well. My intention of this review is to NOT belittle the creator of this app (Winmail File Viewer), as it does work with other types of files. Its just to point out to those looking for the ability to view pictures embedded in the dreaded winmail.dat file, that this app is NOT for you. Thank you.
